Personal Computer

Mac or "PC"?

One of favorite pet peeves is the tendency to call any computer that's not a Macintosh a "PC". Software that doesn't run on Macs is "for PC". The implication is that Macs are not just any computer, but are something special, something much more. In fact, Apple pushes its users to believe that not only is a Macintosh not just a "PC" - it's not a PC at all! It's a Macintosh!

What I never understood is that their use of "PC" is nowhere near descriptive enough to be useful in many of the contexts in which they shoehorn it into use. As a GNU/Linux user, I don't want to know if an application is "for PC" - I want to know if it runs on my OS, and "PC" doesn't tell me whether it runs on Windows or on GNU/Linux, or either. When I wonder on what OS an application runs, I'm looking for a positive assertion of what it does run on - not a negative assertion of what it doesn't. This callous disregard for other platforms is evidence of the subtle bigotry inherent in Apple's corporate marketing strategies.

What's more, there's a strong case that Macs are more "personal" of a computer than what they call PCs! Apple has built it's empire firmly on the desktop, after all!
